Preliminary Exercise 5: Analyzing Genre in Film

-Introduction

Genres are ways stories are characterize through troops and certain plot points that shows what the overall story is about. in that the genre I analyze for this exercise is physiological thriller. With this genre it about how the character is viewing the world and themselves, it is shown in multiples way. By the setting they are in and how the character reacts to their problems/environments which is through extreme ways usually.  This genre is produced by the producer to tell a story through, that it is deep in metaphors or messaging. Through the film messaging, this leads to the audience interpretation of the film by the double meaning, and codes. In films that have a genre of romance, when to two romance lead meet the camera frame and the lighting might change to focus on them and their meeting.

Furthermore, with physiological thriller one of the main conflicts is the character and their distorted reality, with their reality being mess with through the situation they are in or mental state they are trying to overcome it, but it does not always seem how it is. Since their reality is distorted, this is shown by the way the characters thought they did something just for it not to be true and them seeing things that are real to them. Another example on genres are horror movies, with horror the film might have a cast of characters dealing with a "big bad" and with the genre of horror there is sub genres that come with it, for instance horror-supernatural movies.  It still deals with a "big bad" that is hunting down the cast, but the hunter is a ghost or demon instead of a human. With all of the genres at there, my personal favorite is romance because of the two romance leads following in love with each other. The film shows it through the characters holding hands, kissing, or being so understanding with each other by hearing their thoughts and feelings. Through the films having music that cause me as a watcher to be at peace and watch the characters be in love. One of my favorite romance movies are princess and the frog, corpse bride, and beauty and the beast. Because in these films, the two romance leads learn to understand each other and grow together to fully love each other.

This goes back to my assignment, to look at the mise en scene elements in physiologically thriller. And their significance of iconography and narrative themes, and their connection to narrative themes. I use bubble diagram to analyze the genre. It allows me to fully understand the genre and the common troops that come with it. The genre is thriller, because it is intense and suspenseful that build up through the story and the sub-genre is physiologically. Because it deals with the character mental state and how they are dealing with the intense situation. This cause me to look at the iconography. which refers to visual symbols, and other elements of a film that have certain meaning beyond the actual place on the screen. It connects to audience engagement by having the audience thinking about the film long term and interpret it. Scene that shows symbols from the physiologically thriller is the "whore" written on the mirror from the black swan, "hey its johnny" from the shining, the man crying on the couch from get out, and the invisible man from the invisible man. All these films use symbols to show deeper meaning it and get the audience questioning the character mental state or their environment. This goes in the central message of the films, which is narrative themes. The audience get interested by them understanding the film and how the theme in the films is shown within the story. It allows producer to put themes like family in their films in unique ways to grab the audience attention. Themes like mental illness, abuse, crime, and perfection.  Are ways that producers show creative in their films.

-Reflection

Through this exercise, I was able to learn about the themes in the genre I choice and how it affects the audience. And with this process, with me being a producer of the film I'm making I am able to make a lot of creative things with the genre. Since It is good one to trick the human mind. With the bubble diagram It show how the genre has theme, action, and setting that usually take place in it. While doing the chart, it was easy for me to do it since in the program I use have a shape option. It was simply to copy the shapes for the chart. Through this assignment It was interesting to learn more about the genre.
