Preliminary Exercise 3: Introduction to Mise en scene Organizer

-Introduction to the Elements of Mise en scene for the film inside out

The objective of today's assignment it was analyzing mise en scene, and it looks like in movies. What mise en scene is the elements in a shot or scene. With that being mise en scene it is important to learn because of the film I'm going to make. Learning abouts elements like acting, lighting, and set design these are things that send messages to the audience. With lighting it can show a character emotions or genre it is in. With genre, it is shown the movie I pick inside out 2. In the movie the main character Riley has emotion, with each emotion they have a color that represent it. So, they set in to show what Riley should feel in the scene. It relates to semiotics, because each sign it the movie have a connotation and denotation. For example, when Riley was about to be shown going into the hockey ring the excitement in her face gives the feeling that she is happy to play.

-Reflection

What I learn from mise en scene is that, when it come to a shot or scene everything matters. When it comes to lighting, costumes, and acting it matters. When it comes to these elements it is there to show a story and what the message is, with that I have to make sure what I put in the movie have meaning to the film. The example I use inside out shows how these shots is used to tell a story.

Preliminary Exercise 2: Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics Analysis

-Introduction to Roland Barthes' Theory of Semiotics

According to every sign have a denotation and connotation, anything in the culture can be a sign and send a specific meaning. An example of this would be a green light, the denotation would be the light being green. And the connotation would be it is time to go, because with the color green it has be associated with it being time to go.

An example of this theory is from the movie Coraline the character Coraline would go to another door that leads to her life but an idealized version of it. Her going through the door is the denotation, and the connotation is freedom from her ordinary life. With that freedom form it, it also gives the idea that she is escaping from the real world to be in this safe place for her.

 -Reflection

What I've learn to impalement it in my film, is the actions that the characters make lead the audience to feel certain ways. I can also lean into the message of my film, with the action in it. Understanding that signs have a denotation, and a connotation can greatly help me with my characters motives and beliefs.

Preliminary Exercise 1: Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics Analysis

-Introduction to Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics

Ferdlinand te saussure was a French linguist that theorized that a sign is made up in two parts, the signifier and the signified. The signifier is the physical form of the sign, for example an image of an apple. And the signified is the meaning of the signifier, with the examples of an apple they tend to represent health. With those two parts it makes a sign.

An example of this theory is from the movie "Batman mask of the Phantasm". In the scene of Bruce Wayne taking to his parents' grave, it signified loneliness and a sense of being lost he is in the world. And how he is looking to his dead parents for help, during this confusing time in his life.

-Reflection

By understanding this theory, I can apply it to the lighting, colors, and props. I can use it to convey themes or messages in my film. For instance, I would use colors to show a character emotion.
