Preliminary Exercise 1: Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics Analysis

-Introduction to Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics

Ferdlinand te saussure was a French linguist that theorized that a sign is made up in two parts, the signifier and the signified. The signifier is the physical form of the sign, for example an image of an apple. And the signified is the meaning of the signifier, with the examples of an apple they tend to represent health. With those two parts it makes a sign.

An example of this theory is from the movie "Batman mask of the Phantasm". In the scene of Bruce Wayne taking to his parents' grave, it signified loneliness and a sense of being lost he is in the world. And how he is looking to his dead parents for help, during this confusing time in his life.

-Reflection

By understanding this theory, I can apply it to the lighting, colors, and props. I can use it to convey themes or messages in my film. For instance, I would use colors to show a character emotion.
